My time at Salt Lake Community College.
As a biracial Black and Latin American woman of color, it was important to me to be involved with programs and clubs available to me. I joined the Salt Lake Community College Program Amigos Mentors as well as Salt Lake Community College Black Student Union. I soon became an employee with the Amigos Mentors Student Council. Proposing an aspiration, a way to show appreciation and motivation to others. Originating “Mentor of the Week.” We would highlight the most active member and praise them for their efforts in the program. I am proud of this Inclusion I created! It encouraged the students to want to be involved and active in our program showing gratitude to students’ efforts! I then became a member of AmeriCorps to bridge my community services with mentoring and volunteering time, completing over three hundred hours of volunteer work. As a member of the Salt Lake Community College Black Student Union Club, I participated in community service projects and partake in increasing the strength of community relations and cultural awareness between the college, its community, with Black and African Americans. After my learning experiences at Salt Lake Community College, my desire to gain more specific proficiency in employment brought me to my current internship with The State Bureau of Investigations. My position is working aside Victim Advocates in Victim Services. The interpretation of the fundaments of victims' advocacy, came with real hands-on experience. Involvement with victims of crime, crisis, trauma, and fatalities, I have been able to observe, retain, expand my skills working with people. As I examine the listening skills, empathy, courage, coping, and resource support that is required, I see the advantages of practicing professionally as an Advocate. I am inspired and encouraged by professionals in this career field. My humble life experiences have driven me to see the value of education and the benefits of obtaining a Degree in Social Work. A cumulative of education will broaden my proficiency to better aid my community contributing to my learning experiences I will continue to work resiliently with perseverance in hopes that one day, I can give back to my community. Being a living example to our youth, mothers, women, and men of color. Acknowledging the opportunities that are available with the incentive to not only aspire more but be ready to do the imperative task necessary. I believe I am a part of our humbled diverse community.
